After I watched the youtube video about how many hours students spend in front of electronic technology I realized that even though I work with infants and toddlers, my students may be spending equal hours in front of TVs, Computers and electronic toys that buzz and ding.
The article introducing Tech Lit spoke about a need for higher level thinking as a 21st Century goal for education. I believe this can be achieved through technology if quality technology is used. This week I plan to draw as much technology into my classroom as possible. I would like to expose my children to the world outside of their natural environment, and technology may be the way. I will make documentation panels with photographs to help them to reflect on past events, search for simple machines (such as cranks and pulleys), and choose toys that promote multiple levels of exploration.
Some of the biggest challenges I face are my limited budget, and lack of control of classroom resources. The latter is especially difficult because I share a classroom with my coworkers and we don’t always hold the same opinion on toys, books, and supplies. The budget is also a challenge. I don’t have a lot of extra income to spend on materials, and many quality technological materials are expensive.
My best hope of overcoming my challenges is to share data on quality child care settings with regard to technology. From here, I can perhaps persuade the director to fund quality materials that help children develop technological literacy.
